New Balance ended with a great year in 2021, the OG brand has re-established itself amongst youth-culture and is now a brand to be reckoned with. With designing some of the most sought-after kicks in the sneaker world, reimagining heritage sneakers, and even welcoming Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis as New Balance’s new Creative Director following the successful partnership. The brand has had its hand on the pulse of creative culture, collaborating with brands like Casablanca on the newest XC-72 silhouette, Stray Rats on the 991, JJJJound on the chunky and technical 990v4, and more.
2021 was the year for 1017 ALYX 9SM, forging the creative path with a Moncler collaboration, a Nike partnership on revamped high-top Air Force 1s, and even releasing a variety of new sleek silhouettes in true Matt Williams fashion - from shoes, clothes, to high-end accessories. NEPENTHES sub-label NEEDLES has brought together more homely updated staples for its Spring/Summer 2022 collection. This time, a capsule filled with button-up cabana shirts crafted with the most high-quality fabric with an amazing attention to detail. Showcasing a selection of Rebuild by Needles, Cabana Shirts in a variety of styles, and accessories to match for an all-NEEDLES fit.
Founded by legendary ex-pro skateboarder Jerry Hsu, Sci-Fi Fantasy started off as a side-hustle after leaving skate brand Chocolate, but as time passed so did demand for Jerry’s unique take on streetwear. Jerry’s take on fashion can be said to be a representation of his skate style and general aesthetic - minimalist, technical, and very... very... clean. Inspired by his interests, the brand pays homage to movie tropes, anime, and even potentially extraterrestrial sites.
Back with the newest interpretation of the beloved Chuck 70 2-in-1 model, Chinese-born designer Feng Chen Wang who is known for her remixed deconstruction aesthetic, now uses fabrics that emulate other material. For example, the Grey silhouette uses leather fabric that mimics the aesthetic of poorly-laid concrete, giving it a new edge and feel. The Pink version adopts the concrete aesthetic and merges it with a body of beautiful mellow pink, the contrasting colors seem to balance each-other out.
Release after release, 2021 was the celebratory year for MEDICOM TOY’S 25th year in existence, and its world-renowned BE@RBRICK’s 20th birthday. As a celebration MEDICOM tapped CLOT Founder and Creative Director Edison Chen to curate for its BE@BRICK WORLD WIDE TOUR 3, the best creators from the East and West to design the strongest selection of BE@RBRICK’s to have ever been showcased.
