An Exclusive First Look at CLOT's Spring/Summer 2021 Campaign 'CHINESE HAWAIIAN'

CLOT's Spring/Summer 2021 "Chinese Hawaiian" collection takes inspiration from Edison Chen's frequent travels to Hawaii, fusing CLOT's East-meets-West heritage with design elements from the island state. 

With Chen living in LA but often traveling to China and Japan pre-pandemic, Hawaii served as the midpoint between the two locations and an oasis that sparked the inspiration behind this collection. Research for the collection quickly resulted in vintage images of Hawaii's Chinese diaspora and their amalgamated culture that fused traditional Chinese styles with Hawaiian taste. Images of how these immigrants dressed, graphics from Chinese Hawaiian restaurants, and hotels all played a major influence in the design of this collection.

Colorful, textural, and fun, the pieces in "Chinese Hawaiian" are a mix of casual and dressier styles. Many pieces feature lace or mesh detailing and light fabrics, mixing traditionally heavier silhouettes such as hoodies and trenchcoats with these light materials to create summer-ready pieces. 

Design details include intricate embroidery throughout with motifs such as the Hawaiian flower and characters from mahjong pieces. Unexpected details are included throughout, with color-blocked panels on pants, patterned pant hems, and mixing of different fabrics and textures. For the graphics, traditionally Hawaiian elements are mixed with Chinese themes to create CLOT's "Chinese Hawaiian" vision. 

Each piece is treated like a canvas so the final product is akin to a painting, with unexpected graphic positioning and surprise elements. Of course, CLOT's signature pieces such as the baseball shirt, CLOT apparel basics, and silk shirts have been remixed for this season's theme. 

During these unprecedented times, CLOT hopes to offer a tropical escape using apparel as a canvas with "Chinese Hawaiian."
