Edison Chen on Sole Collector's Full Size Run - Talks VLONE, Kiss Of Death, ACU Shanghai, Sneaker Culture and more!
Co-hosts Brandan Dunne, Matt Welty, and Trinidad James interview CLOT Founder and multi-hyphenate creative Edison Chen on one of Sole Collector's most recent episodes - the group talk sneakers, Kanye West, reselling, Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong, on-feet kicks and how the sneaker market has expanded in China.
The show took a deep dive into Edison's sneaker history, in which he discusses his first and favorite sneaker, having been an avid basketball player as a kid - he fell in love with the Jordan 13 Low. Later on in life with the conception of the Hong Kong-based streetwear imprint CLOT, he was able to collaborate, for the first time, with Jordan Brand on the same shoe that introduced him to the sneaker game.
Some of the main shoes that have really made an impact and gave him a real introduction into the world of sneakers; Hiroshi Fujiwara's Air Woven and Nike Haven Air Max 97 (which was re-released in three different CLOT collaborations). The release of the Air Max 97 collaboration, concurrently was the start of Nike's journey into new ways of conceptualising their art-direction and style. Which then saw a typhoon of neon-colored, uniquely designed, and creative Air Force 1s, Dunks and many other notable sneakers.
The group also talk about Edison's part in ACU and the store as a creative force. ACU in Shanghai was made to push the boundaries of what was possible and impossible at the time, especially within the small tight-nit sneaker community. This goes hand-in-hand with the first collaboration on the first Nike "Kiss Of Death", where CLOT was denied any opportunity to redesign a shoe many times until they were given a chance to do a remix of the Air Max 1 in 2006. ACU also was used to exhibit some of the greatest creative's best pieces, featuring up-and-coming and established artists of the time; Hiroshi Fujiwara, Futura Dos Mil, Stash, and even Jeff Staple.
Edison also speaks on China as a whole, and how they in the past 5 to 10 years they have grown to love and adopt sneaker culture, having been seen on families from grandmas to children. Also discussing the way Edison wears his K.O.D. and the reason for the clear toe cap of each shoe. He also talks VLONE, coaching ASAP BARI and speaking about this creativity within BARI.
