Gagosian Presents New Waves, Alex Israel’s First Solo Exhibition in Hong Kong
Celebrating his debut in Hong Kong, Los Angeles artist Alex Israel showcases New Waves, a new collection of paintings presented by Gagosian. Always using his hometown for inspiration, the Los Angeles native garnered fame for his vibrant, large-scale paintings of sunsets, beachscapes, and self-portraits on a backdrop of molded neoprene and fiberglass panels.
For New Waves, Israel based the design of the paintings on another work of his — SPF-18 — a coming-of-age rom-com that revolves around love and loss, shot with the fragile scenery of burning sun and breaking waves that are so characteristic to the shores of Southern California. With this in mind, Israel created an assortment of 18 airbrushed paintings in four different sizes and a broad palette of colors that seamlessly transition into hazy gradients. In addition to the paintings, a lifelike painted sculpture of a California brown pelican hovers in the backmost room.
Visit the New Waves exhibition at Gagosian Hong Kong, open now through August 11, and ride the wave with Alex Israel as he recreates the moods of California surf culture and the American Dream. Furthermore, his LA unisex clothing label, Infrathin, is available for purchase in the gallery lobby, and his feature-length film, SPF-18 can be found on iTunes and Netflix.
