From Chinese dragons to the Egyptian sphinx, altered beasts can be found in ancient myths around the world, each with characteristics of different animals mashed into one. These mythical creatures, each unique to its culture, were imagined to make sense of natural phenomena—such as thunder and lightning, or sickness and death—that were yet to be understood.
